These are only a few of the obstacles that kept Clive Staples Lewis from becoming a Christian. After the death of his mother at age nine, Lewis began to drift away from the faith of his youth. His great education helped him completely turn his back on Christianity and become an ardent atheist. Each chapter of the book is placed in the context of a story about a bookstore study group.
Among the group members are an ardent atheist, a pluralist, and a non-rational Christian, all following the direction of a Christian named John. Far more often articulated is the idea that if a good God exists, we would not experience so much pain and suffering in the world, which is the second obstacle dealt with.
